Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks suffered a serious collarbone injury at Saturday's training camp practice at Nissan Stadium. General manager Mike Borgonzi responded to the latest setback endured by the former first-round pick by waiving-injuring him on Monday. If Burks goes unclaimed on waivers, almost a certainty, he'll revert back to IR with the Titans.
Burks was entering a make-or-break camp in Nashville. Now that he's suffered another injury, the Titans have officially run out of patience with Burks' persistent issues. The underlying reason why the Titans were finally confident enough to move on from the bust is painfully obvious.
Head coach Brian Callahan has full confidence in his rookie and sophomore receivers.
Underlying reason for Titans cutting Treylon Burks is painfully obvious
Burks is a big-bodied receiver who plays the "X" boundary position. The Titans entered camp with a number of options at that spot, including fourth-round rookie Elic Ayomanor. Ayomanor has impressed throughout the early stages of camp, displaying chemistry with rookie quarterback Cam Ward.
The Titans also signed veteran receiver Van Jefferson in free agency earlier this offseason. The experienced Jefferson has earned the majority of first-team reps at X receiver through a handful of practices. He's been reliable, and there's a strong indication he'll begin the season as the starter outside.
And finally, sophomore undrafted free agent Bryce Oliver is capable of playing outside as well. He's one of Callahan's core special teamers. The second-year wideout has made plays at practice when afforded opportunity. On Saturday, just a handful of reps before Burks failed to complete a leaping sideline grab, injuring himself in the process, Oliver climbed the ladder and snagged a contested catch near the sideline.
It perfectly showcased the difference between Burks and even a UDFA like Oliver.
