The Tennessee Titans signed Mitch Trubisky to a two-year contract in free agency to be their backup quarterback behind Cam Ward this season. Despite that, Trubisky was absent from the first few voluntary OTA practices. That created additional opportunities for Will Levis and Hendon Hooker to compete for the No. 2 or 3 role.

Trubisky arrived at Titans OTAs for their seventh of 10 scheduled practices. It was revealed that Trubisky was absent while awaiting the birth of a child. Even though OTAs are totally voluntary, he decided to show up following the conclusion of his personal matter.

Trubisky was lights-out throughout his first two practice sessions. It took just two sessions for Trubisky to firmly establish himself as the Titans' unquestioned backup quarterback. There's no pathway (barring injury) for Levis or Hooker there.

Mitch Trubisky establishes himself as Titans' backup QB by dominating OTAs

Trubisky completed 13-of-15 passes at his first open practice, including 5-of-5 in a late red zone period, according to team reporter Jim Wyatt. The following day, Trubisky built on that momentum by going 15-of-18, bringing his two-day passing total to 28-of-33. He's been extremely accurate and effective.

The Titans paid Trubisky $10.5 million over two campaigns. That's backup quarterback money. The decision to replace Levis was essentially made then and there, but witnessing his command of the offense at OTAs settles any debates.

It shouldn't be surprising to hear Trubisky is totally comfortable in Brian Daboll's offense. Trubisky played under Daboll for the Buffalo Bills in 2021. That relationship undoubtedly played a key role in Mike Borgonzi's decision to pursue the quarterback in free agency.

Meanwhile Levis has been uneven at OTAs, committing similar turnovers to the ones that completely derailed his 2024 season as the starter. With Trubisky thriving, the current indication remains that the Titans will look to trade Levis this offseason. Perhaps an opportunity will arise during training camp or the preseason.

The Titans needed to get significantly better at quarterback behind Ward this offseason. It appears they achieved that by signing Trubisky. Trubisky is thriving at OTAs, leaving no doubt he'll be the backup quarterback in 2026.
