Why the Titans' head coaching vacancy should draw heavy interest from top candidates

The Tennessee Titans are one of the most overlooked franchises in the NFL, but prospective head coaching candidates will soon realize that the job in Nashville is the best opening available.

As of Thursday, six teams are looking to hire a head coach. Those teams are the Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, and Atlanta Falcons. The first thing a prospective head coach is going to look at with all of these positions is the quarterback position.

Reading the tea leaves, only half of the teams on that list have their quarterback of 2026 in the building. The Cardinals are trying to move on from Kyler Murray, the Browns immediately said that they are going to do a lot of work on the QB position this offseason, and the Raiders will almost certainly cut Geno Smith and try to move on with a rookie quarterback that they choose first overall.

Titans' head coaching opening is more attractive than you think

After the news that Cam Ward's shoulder injury isn't serious, it's also obvious that he's the most durable young quarterback of any of the remaining teams. Both Michael Penix Jr. and Jaxson Dart missed multiple games with serious injuries this season.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens are in their own category, and they won't be competing with the Titans for the same candidates. Between cost, durability, and upside, the Titans have the best quarterback situation of any of the teams with head coaching openings, but their advantages don't end there.

As listed in the tweet above, the Titans have more cap space than anyone else in the NFL, and the only other team with an opening that is even in the top-10 of available cap space is the Raiders.

Considering that the Titans already have the quarterback situation figured out, the Tennessee-based club has the best combination of draft capital and available cap space of any of the other openings.

GM Mike Borgonzi knew that this team needed several years to rebuild, so he stockpiled resources and cap space for 2026 and beyond while he was laying the foundation for the rebuild in 2025. With the foundation in place, the team is in the perfect position to be aggressive this offseason and build their roster in the image of the head coach that they choose to lead this rebuild.

An incoming head coach will see a GM with a plan and an owner who knows she needs to be as hands-off as possible going forward. Candidates will see all of the resources in place to hit the ground running in 2026. It won't be hard to improve over the last two years, so it should be easy to build goodwill with the fan base.

With nearly unlimited resources, a new stadium coming soon, low expectations, and an easy schedule ahead, it is hard to imagine a team with a situation half as enticing as what the Titans can offer. All they need now is to pick the right coach with the right vision to get this team back to relevance.
