It hasn’t been a pleasant start for the Tennessee Titans this year, starting off at 1-5 with the offense looking completely lost. While fans may not have possessed Super Bowl aspirations in a new era under Robert Saleh, this kind of start is disheartening, especially when you consider the kind of offseason the organization had.
Thankfully, the Titans finally got out of the loss column in Week 6 with their 26-20 comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts, which ended up being the final game for Chris Ballard as GM for the Colts.
One player that contributed to the Titans’ win in Indianapolis was star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who had two sacks along with a forced fumble and a recovery. Not to mention, he was constantly generating pressure from the inside.
Momentum has begun for the Titans after Week 6 win
This win over the Colts is a confidence boost, especially when you have someone like Simmons who is by far the best interior defensive tackle in the league (and it's not really close). It's just too bad that he doesn't get more national attention because of the current state of the Titans.
However, He is committed to Tennessee considering he signed a three-year extension to stay with the Titans earlier this offseason. That move showed that he is in for the long-haul despite the Titans still being stuck in the rebuilding stage.
At the same time, anything in the NFL is possible and while it's very unlikely the Titans would consider moving on from Simmons, the NFL is a "you can never say never" type of league. Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports listed Simmons as one of five players who could use a change of scenary, which just doesn't make sense considering the extension he just got, and the Titans finally getting their first win of the season.
The thought of trading Jeffery Simmons is beyond ridiculous
"Jeffery Simmons has been the best interior defensive lineman in the NFL for two seasons now. The casual fan probably doesn't see much Titans football on "RedZone," but Simmons is a one-man wrecking crew for a terrible team." wrote Dajani.
"Simmons is the longest-tenured Titan and the emotional leader of this team. He just signed a three-year, $105.8 million extension four months ago. It doesn't seem likely that he's moved, but Simmons would be talked about like one of the best players in the NFL if he were wrecking games for a contender." Dajani added.
With what the Titans are building up with Robert Saleh, trading away a star player in his prime makes absolutely no sense. He's too valuable to give away, and the Titans didn't just hand out his big extension to trade him a few months later.
He is a franchise player that can literally wreck a game at any moment. Now granted, Saleh will have to find ways to keep improving this team to avoid being near the bottom of the league and possibly frustrating Simmons. At the same time, he's committed to the Titans so while there should be some trades made before the NFL trade deadline, Simmons should not even be a thought that crosses Mike Borgonzi's mind.
