The Tennessee Titans possess a league-leading amount of cap space heading into NFL free agency. Fans are hoping to see general manager Mike Borgonzi take an aggressive approach to surround Cam Ward with talent.
One of the names that keeps popping up as a fan-favorite target in free agency is Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce. For a team desperately needing an explosive threat, Pierce seemed like the perfect candidate to pair with Ward in his sophomore season.
Recent rumors suggest the Colts will do everything they can to retain Pierce in an effort to build around him, 27-year-old running back Jonathan Taylor, and quarterback Daniel Jones, who also requires a new contract.
Luckily, when one door closes, another one sometimes opens, and it looks like the Colts might be forced to cut wide receiver Michael Pittman in order to keep the other parts of the offense intact.
Titans could target Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. if he's released in NFL free agency
While nothing is certain, cutting Pittman to afford Pierce has been brought up repeatedly, and there hasn't been any real resistance from reporters around the Colts. If that happens, the Titans should be even more interested in Pittman than they would have been in Pierce.
Since becoming a starter five years ago, Pittman has totalled 4,751 yards and has never had a season with fewer than 784 yards. He has been one of the most consistent receivers in the NFL over that time, thriving as a possession and contested catch weapon, and most imporantly he is a proven X-receiver.
At 6-4, 223, and with a track record like his, it is hard to imagine Pittman being a free agent bust. Similar to a younger version of the team's signing of DeAndre Hopkins a few years ago, this signing would work because Pittman has a skillset that ages well. The difference between Pittman and the then-31-year-old Hopkins is that the former still has multiple years of prime production left.
Whether the Colts choose to retain Pierce or Pittman, the Titans should keep a close eye on the situation and open their wallet for whichever one makes it to free agency. Either option would be a big boost to the Titans' passing game under Brian Daboll in 2026.
