The Tennessee Titans are relying on Dan Moore and JC Latham to hold down the offensive tackle positions this season. Together, Moore and Latham project as the best bookend duo the offense has had in several years. Renewed hope is present for a competent offensive line.
New general manager Mike Borgonzi signed Moore to a lucrative four-year, $82 million contract in free agency. That decision was met with mixed reviews, but the Titans were understandably willing to pay a premium to address a long-running problem. Moore's arrival meant Latham would kick over to right tackle, the position he played at Alabama en route to being a top 10 pick.
It's imperative that Moore and Latham stay healthy this season. While the jury remains out on their performances, the depth behind them is dreadful. The Titans arguably possess the worst offensive tackle depth in the NFL heading into training camp.
Several tackles will compete for the swing role behind Moore and Latham. That roster decision may be decided by unconventional methods. Among the contenders, third-year blocker John Ojukwu offers the offense a unique skillset that could give him the inside track on a 53-man roster spot.
Titans OT John Ojukwu may quietly be a 53-man roster lock
Ojukwu played 217 snaps at right tackle last season. He earned a stellar pass-blocking grade of 68.4 from Pro Football Focus. Notably, Ojukwu added 45 offensive snaps to his totals as a tight end, or more accurately, as an extra in-line blocker.
That role could give Ojukwu an upper hand at training camp. The Titans may not retain a traditional blocking tight end this year a la Nick Vannett or Geoff Swaim. That's not Chig Okonkwo, and it's probably not rookie Gunnar Helm. It hasn't been Josh Whyle either, at least not with the vigor once predicted.
Ojukwu was occasionally trusted in that role last season, and Brian Callahan could expand on that in 2025. Of course nothing is guaranteed. Ojukwu must prove capable of playing offensive tackle in a pinch, should Moore or Latham get hurt.
UDFA tackle Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson is battling for a roster spot. The Titans have always been intrigued by 2023 sixth-round pick Jaelyn Duncan, who is entering a make-or-break camp. Veteran free-agent signing Blake Hance also has guard-tackle flexibility. Journeyman Oli Udoh is also on the 90-man roster.
The Titans occasionally used Ojukwu in a hyper-specific role throughout 2024. His chances of making the 53-man roster will increase if Callahan doesn't keep a traditional blocking tight end. Ojukwu developed into a useful NFL'er last season, providing him an advantage in training camp.
