Over the past two seasons, Peter Skoronski has been everything the Tennessee Titans could have hoped for when they spent the 11th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on a guard.
While he hasn't been on a team good or popular enough for an interior offensive lineman to garner attention, his time is coming quickly and the Titans need to make it a priority to sign him to an extension before the general masses learns how good he is.
That time is hopefully coming soon, but the recent extension for New York Jets guard Joe Tippmann clarifies just how expensive a move like that will be for the Titans.
Joe Tippmann extension adds context to Titans' negotiations with Peter Skoronski
On Monday morning, Tippmann signed a new extension with the Jets worth $16.6 million per year over the next four seasons.
Skoronski and Tippmann were in the same draft class, and the Titans' guard was a slightly younger, much higher draft pick. It is hard to believe that this contract is anything other than a floor for what Skoronski and his representation will be asking for from the Titans.
The good news for the Titans is that this is a reasonable deal for an interior offensive lineman. The $16.6 million per year price tag slots Tippmann in as the 13th highest-paid guard in the NFL and it is a far cry from the $24 million per year that Tyler Smith makes or the $23.5 million per year that Trey Smith earns.
It is hard to know exactly where Skoronski will fit into that range, but considering he doesn't have the accolades or the team success some of the other highest-paid interior blockers have, the Titans might get lucky and lock up one of the best young guards in the league at a reasonable price.
Considering what Skoronski has done when the team has been at the bottom of the barrel over the last few years, fans should be excited about getting him under contract so they can see what he does for an energized offense filled with talented coaches and explosive skill position players.
Cam Ward needs support from the trenches, and signing Skoronski to a second contract will go a long way toward making that dream a reality.
