Tennessee Titans fans expect the team to hold multiple position battles across the offensive line at training camp. Looking at the roster, the belief is that there's no straightforward solution at center or right guard. That storyline is currently developing as the Titans hold voluntary OTA practices.

The Titans signed low-cost veterans Austin Schlottmann and Cordell Volson in free agency. They drafted Pat Coogan and Fernando Carmona on Day Three of the 2026 NFL Draft. Jackson Slater is a returning sophomore.

The expectation is that Schlotmann is competing at center with Coogan and possibly Slater. At right guard, Slater, Carmona, and Volson are competitive options. Well, starting left guard Peter Skoronski recently hinted that one of these positions isn't up for grabs after all.

Skoronski spoke at the podium following a recent OTA practice that was open to the media. He discussed a variety of topics, including working with new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and installing the scheme. Asked about position battles, Skoronski may have revealed there actually isn't a position battle at center.

"Austin Schlottmann has been in the system, so he knows it really well," Skoronski began an answer to a question about competition at right guard and center. "He's been the anchor of that group because of how well he knows the system. He's totally what I expected from an intelligence [standpoint], which you need at center. Cordell [Volson] and Jackson [Slater] have been really good. They've been on top of things schematically. Everyone is competing."

Notice how Schlottmann was the only name Skoronski bothered mentioning at center. When discussing the competition at right guard, he noted both Volson and Slater are competing. That theory passes the sniff check. With Slater primarily competing at guard, Schlottmann probably isn't facing any competition at center.

Skoronski highlighted Schlottmann's experience in the system. He started four games for Daboll and new position coach Carmen Bricillo with the New York Giants last season. Schlottmann spent two seasons (2024-25) alongside Daboll and Bricillo in East Rutherford.

The Titans didn't invest premium resources at center this offseason after releasing Lloyd Cushenberry. Schlottmann brings eight years of NFL experience to the table. His familiarity with the offense being installed by Daboll and Bricillo gives him a huge advantage. Skoronski's answer, paired with reading between the lines, strongly suggests Schlottmann will be the starting center in 2026.
