The Tennessee Titans began OTAs on Monday. The practice session was closed to the media and fans, so we were reliant on the organization to release clips and photos. Luckily, some terrific content was produced by the in-house social team.
New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had a healthy Cam Ward at quarterback. Remember that OTAs don't permit live contact (tackling), but 7-on-9, 7-on-9, and 11-on-11 team drills are permitted. The Titans had some pretty awesome clips hit the social feeds.
In this compilation, Ward can be seen hitting rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate and tight end Gunnar Helm on the first and second passing plays. Interestingly enough, the follow-up throws are touchdown passes to running backs Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. It appears Coach Daboll could be preparing Pollard and Spears to play bigger passing-down roles than anyone expects.
Titans OC Brian Daboll using Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears on passing downs at OTAs
Pollard, who is entering a contract year, has always been a capable pass catcher. The former Memphis standout has accumulated 250 career receptions, including 74 in two seasons with the Titans. Daboll appears interested in utilizing Pollard's versatility.
Spears has always been a dynamic scat-back with pass-catching upside when healthy. Spears might be Daboll's change-of-pace back on offense. The 2023 third-round selection, who is also on an expiring contract, is most effective when utilized as a dangerous open-space playmaker. Despite being limited by injury, he's produced 220-plus receiving yards in three consecutive seasons.
Adding another layer to this conversation, the Titans drafted former Penn State back Nicholas Singleton with a fifth-round pick in April. When Singleton was his most productive for the Nittany Lions in 2024, he notched 41 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. He's definitely a capable pass-catching back with receiving upside.
Coach Daboll is spending the offseason program installing his offense. Ward and his supporting cast are currently going through the motions at OTAs while getting comfortable with new concepts and play calls. It's obviously difficult to make any final takeaway observations from team-controlled clips at OTAs, but it certainly appears Daboll is getting Pollard and Spears involved in the passing game.
