Over the last week, young players like Derick Hall, Drake London, and Nick Herbig have all gotten big extensions to stay with their current teams as long-term building blocks. While the Tennessee Titans are still trying to focus on building up the next generation, they have one player who deserves a big extension as soon as possible.
Peter Skoronski had an up-and-down rookie year, but since he fully recovered from his appendectomy, he has been one of the fastest-rising guards in the NFL. While guard isn't a sexy position, Skoronski is rock solid in pass protection, and he is surprisingly quick working on double-teams and getting to the second level in the run game.
Compare him to J.C. Latham, who has had a solid start to his career despite people holding him to the standard of guys like former Titans tackle Taylor Lewan or his draft classmate Joe Alt. Latham's up-and-down (but improving) NFL career has been a great reminder of how hard it can be for young offensive linemen in the NFL to consistently get better.
Latest NFL activity should force Tennessee Titans to negotiate quick Peter Skoronski extension
Meanwhile, Skoronski seems like he gets better every game, and as soon as this offense is worth watching, Pro Bowl and All-Pro voters will start to give him the credit he deserves to receive.
Skroronski joined the Titans when they were heading off a cliff and straight into a pit of despair, but despite that, he found a way to get better and improve himself. His narrative alone is enough to warrant consideration for an extension, but the reason why he should absolutely get a new deal is that his play on the field is only going to improve, and his number is going to keep climbing.
Skoronski deserves to be paid like one of the top guards in the NFL, and the Titans should try to get a deal done before he demands to be paid like the best guard in the NFL. A deal now makes sense, and it seems like there is a pre-summer rush to get some of these done across the league, so why not get a deal done now and send everyone into summer with a smile on their faces?
