Titans offensive line is on the verge of a serious breakthrough in Week 3

After years of trauma, Tennessee Titans fans have been conditioned to expect the worst from their offensive line. After the colossal failure in Week 1, the first thing people blamed was the offensive line, but people who were paying attention were quick to point out that the blocking was actually fairly solid against the New York Jets.

Then Week 2 came and went, and once again the Titans' offensive line did well. In fact, you could make the strong argument that the Titans won the trench warfare on both sides of the ball in that game. They just came up short in the crucial moments.

The idea of a better offensive line started to settle in with Titans fans, but when analysts started showing off this improvement with metrics and graphs, it really hit home that this was a real and tangible change happening.

Titans offensive line continues trending in right direction before Week 3

Below is the chart that really got people going because it painted JC Latham in a positive light, and that was someone that fans had already started dismissing as a player who could be a building block for this franchise.

There have been several other charts since then that point out the success of the offensive line as a whole, but the most important thing is that the film backs up what these charts suggest.

The goal has always been to get to the point where Dan Moore is the team's worst starter on the offensive line. Not because Moore is bad, but because he is an average left tackle in the NFL. Average sounds like a bad word, but there aren't too many teams that can brag about average-or-better starters at each offensive line spot. Checking each one of those boxes puts you somewhere near the top third of the NFL.

Every Titans fan wants the team to be great, and they cite the rebuilds that happened overnight, like the New England Patriots and the Houston Texans. However, the Titans have pulled themselves out of a worse situation than this before, and they didn't do it with a microwave rebuild. Back in the 2014-2015 seasons, they won just 5 games before the organization made a coaching change and Mike Mularkey was hired to bring this team out of the mud.

It took time for those Titans to get from "bottom of the barrel" to "average," and it took a few years to go from that to "good." As much as everyone wants it to be an overnight process, it won't be. However, a good offensive line is a great way to get from a three-win season to the middle of the pack again, and for the first time in a long time, it looks like there is a sustainable path back up the NFL ladder.
