The Tennessee Titans ideally should be the team that makes the biggest splashes this offseason when you look at the cap space and draft picks they have lined up to build around quarterback Cam Ward. According to Over The Cap, the Titans are set to enter free agency with over $100 million in financial flexibility, so general manager Mike Borgonzi should get aggressive.

With a new head coach in Robert Saleh, the Titans can only go up from here and they have the chance to build something special in Nashville. However, it certainly won’t be an easy task at all. While there will be all kinds of projections on what the Titans should do, it never hurts to think outside the box.

A trade idea proposed by Matt Harmon suggests that the Titans should call the Dolphins and “buy a draft pick” and take on Tua Tagovailoa and his contract from Miami. Harmon also said that Tua “just becomes a non-threatening backup to Cam Ward.”

Titans linked to crazy trade idea for Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa

On the surface level, this may seem like a horrible idea for the Titans considering that they could just easily sign a veteran to backup Ward. Not to mention, such a large chunk of their cap space probably shouldn’t be used on a backup quarterback. At the same time, Harmon does provide some understanding as to why it would also benefit the Titans.

Tagovailoa is on his way to being a backup until he proves that he can start again. The expectation is that he'll undergo a messy breakup with the Dolphins this offseason. The Dolphins have a new GM and head coach, and they've already been cleaning house.

Backup quarterback is a position that is overlooked until the starter goes down. While it should not be a huge priority for a team, it does have value. With Tagovailoa's situation, obviously the Titans would have to take on his massive contract, but to Harmon’s point, the Dolphins more than likely will have to give up draft picks to get out of the contract.

Depending on the compensation, it might not be the worst idea for the Titans to consider. Harmon’s point provides clarity and there are more rewards than risks. However, it would obviously be a huge concern if the Titans took on that kind of contract just for Tagovailoa to be a backup.
