Even before the 2026 NFL Draft, Tennessee Titans fans were urging the team to address the offensive line. When you remember what the last five years have been like for Titans fans, you can see why this position group is such a focal point for their fears and frustrations.
With an uninspiring position battle taking place at right guard, and a journeyman backup getting his chance to start at center, nearly all of the concerns have been focused on the interior of the offensive line. However, those who were paying close attention and reading the tea leaves knew that there was another issue that was flying under the radar.
The Titans need to sign a backup offensive tackle, specifically someone who can play right tackle at a serviceable or better level.
JC Latham injury gives Tennessee Titans a warning shot to sign an offensive tackle
Worrying about offensive tackle depth might have seemed like overkill a month ago, but that fear moved to the front of the line when the team put JC Latham on the PUP list heading into training camp.
Whether Latham's injury is minor or not, it exposes how thin the team is at offensive tackle.
The good news is that if the Titans act now, they have a chance to prevent this preseason problem from becoming a regular season problem. If they go out and sign a proven right tackle, they can insulate themselves from potential disaster down the line.
Let's say the team reunites with Jack Conklin. He can sit on the bench and stay in shape, then if Latham gets a bump that knocks him out for any length of time, Conklin can come in and play the right tackle position at a high level.
On the other side, if Dan Moore gets banged up, the Titans have the option to move Latham to left tackle (where he played fine as a rookie) and bring Conklin in to be the right tackle.
There are other options as well, but this is just an example of how this problem can be fixed before Cam Ward has to deal with a backup offensive tackle going against the Houston Texans' defensive front. If they wait too long, injuries will pile up around the league, and their options will dry up, so this injury should be a wake-up call for how close the Titans are to being woefully unprepared to protect their franchise quarterback.
