Through a few weeks, the Tennessee Titans' offensive line has been encouraging, and that may be the biggest surprise in training camp.
Right tackle JC Latham has looked outstanding, including a new mean streak. Peter Skoronski is being paid like the high-end guard that he is, and Fernando Carmona has gone from rookie third-stringer to starting right guard on the back of his physicality.
However, it hasn't been all good news for this group because when there are risers, there are always fallers. For the Titans, one of those fallers has been right guard Cordell Volson. Recent reports have suggested that the battle for right guard has been so lopsided that Carmona nearly has it locked up already, though no one will confirm that until training camp officially concludes.
Report: Tennessee Titans are starting to weigh changes on the offensive line
Another faller who has flown under the radar is Austin Deculus. He was competing for the swing tackle job, but it has gone so poorly that his time with the Titans might be over sooner rather than later, according to Easton Freeze, who said,
"The name at the center of this is Austin Deculus, the free agent addition the Titans brought in from the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason. From the jump, it wasn’t entirely clear why Tennessee signed him. In his time here through the preseason and practices, the results have not been impressive by any means. If Crenshaw-Dixon can prove himself as a viable swing tackle, that solves a problem cheaply with a young, cost-controlled player. If he can’t, the Titans really do need to do some shopping before the regular season."
This isn't the first time someone close to the Titans has mentioned backup offensive tackle is something the front office could be interested in addressing. There have been several articles on this site about it, and Jim Wyatt even wrote about it on the team's official website.
When it comes to Volson, his departure could guarantee that Pat Coogan and Jackson Slater both make the roster. At swing tackle, Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson is going to be given every chance to show that he can hold up, but it may be another year where he is a roster bubble guy who hovers between being the team's fourth offensive tackle and being on the practice squad.
If that is the case, then fans have been clamoring for Jack Conklin to be brought back as a premier swing tackle, and that would be the best-case scenario for the Titans. If this is what the Titans are thinking, then things will move quickly, and they should be aiming to churn that part of the roster soon so that they can get the new guy up to speed as quickly as possible.
