Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi had an impressive press conference during the week. Borgonzi essentially clarified that he believes trying to solve too many problems in free agency is a bad way to build a football team.
On the topic of free agency, Borgonzi said,
"We use free agency really, you have to fill the roster and you have to be competitive at the same time. But you know, in the future we want to draft and develop these guys, but you know, there will be opportunities to if we see a player that [we deem] is going to help us and we are thin at the position, we are going to attack it."
Considering the team is set to possess more money than anyone this offseason, it stands to reason that the Titans will attempt to "attack" more positions than they did last offseason. Borgonzi simply won't spend recklessly like Ran Carthon once did.
Titans could use free agency to attack key positions of weakness
Borgonzi believes that the Dan Moore, Dre'Mont Jones and Kevin Zeitler signings were good moves as part of the team-building process. Borgonzi's goal was to bolster the trenches with consistent, average play rather than pay premiums for someone with higher upside. Zeitler and Jones were signed to one-year contracts, and the latter was traded at the deadline for draft-pick compensation.
Combining the two ideas of being a little more aggressive in free agency this year and using the offensive line signings as the model for what the Titans want to do on the open market, you can get a clear picture in your head of how Borgonzi may attack the offseason.
Which free agents will hit the market? Luckily, Bleacher Report recently posted its top-50 NFL free agents list for the 2026 offseason. In an effort to keep this exercise realistic, you would do well to assume that the first 10 free agents on this list won't actually reach the open market.
Even with the list cut down to 80% of its original length, there are still a few big takeaways to consider.
First, the Titans are going to have a chance to round out their wide receiver trio. Sitting just outside the top-10 on the free agent list are Romeo Doubs and Alec Pierce, both of whom spend the bulk of their time lined up out wide. Considering that rookies Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike should be penciled in as the starters at "X" and "BIG SLOT" respectively, these targets would fit where the Titans need them to play.
If the Titans want to push that decision to the draft, they are going to have several chances to bolster paper-thin roster positions like cornerback and EDGE. While they aren't likely to shell out for an impact player at either position, you can find names like Greg Newsome, Alontae Taylor, Kwity Paye, Odafe Oweh, and Jaelan Phillips further down the list in the Titans target range.
It is encouraging that Borgonzi seems willing to find a balance between penny-pinching and throwing money at the team's problems in his efforts to rebuild this roster. While watching the games might not be fun right now for Titans fans, they can find excitement in watching players on this list and thinking about what this team could look like if they have a successful offseason in 2026.
