The June 1st deadline passed, and as soon as it did, the L.A. Rams made the blockbuster trade to free Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.
Not only does this mean a superstar from the AFC is jumping ship to the NFC, but it also creates an opportunity for the Titans to get creative and make a phone call they might not normally make.
With any big move comes cap complications, but to be fair, the Browns did a good job making Garrett even more appealing by lowering his initial cap hit to just over $8 million. However, that number doubles in 2027, and then it more than doubles again by the time you get to 2029, when he will cost nearly $60 million.
Titans should call Rams for offensive lineman after Myles Garrett trade
If the Rams want to make sure they have the flexibility to bolster their roster when injuries inevitably hit, then they should look to create cap space without hurting their starting lineup too much. The Rams might shut the Titans down, but that shouldn't stop Mike Borgonzi from calling them about right guard Kevin Dotson.
This is the final season on Dotson's contract, and trading him would save the Rams $16 million. The Rams are going to have to juggle enough when it comes to deciding how to pay Matt Stafford, Byron Young, Steve Avila, Kobie Turner, and others, so Dotson will almost certainly be the odd man out there. Backup guard Justin Dedich has been filling in admirably for two years.
While the Titans are high on their young interior offensive linemen (Jackson Slater, Pat Coogan, Fernando Carmona), everyone would almost certainly feel more comfortable with a veteran in front of Cam Ward this year. The Titans have more than enough cap space to afford to bring in Dotson comfortably, and it would round out their offensive line perfectly.
Similar to other older guards who have been traded for in the past, the Titans could attempt to send a Day 3 pick and maybe a veteran like Cordell Volson to the Rams and bring in the stalwart guard. If he plays admirably, the Titans can afford to extend him, and if he doesn't, then surely 2027 will be the year where one of these interior offensive linemen blows away the coaching staff, right?
The Rams would clear a massive cap hit off of their books and all they have to do is promote a trusted backup to starter this season. Meanwhile, the Titans get to add a younger, bigger version of Kevin Zeitler to the offensive line, which would help JC Latham and Austin Schlottmann. If the Rams are on board, the Titans should make this deal immediately.
Will the Rams be interested in this move? Who knows, but the NFL is proving that everyone is on the trade block now, and in a world where guys like Garrett, Jaylen Waddle, Dexter Lawrence and A.J. Brown are all getting traded, why should someone like Dotson be off the table completely?
