When a team has a young potential franchise quarterback who is on a cheap quarterback contract, it’s important to maximize his abilities to gain complete value on his rookie deal. The Tennessee Titans are in this situation with Cam Ward. Being the 1st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Titans saw him as their next franchise guy.
In his rookie season, it was clear that Ward had some things to clean up about his game. However, he was in a terrible situation as well that included his head coach in Brian Callahan getting fired. Now, Mike Borgonzi has not only helped Ward on the coaching staff of things, but he has also put together a nice little supporting case for him.
Tennessee Titans set up Cam Ward for sophomore success in 2026
With new weapons on the outside, additions to the offensive line, and a massive upgrade at offensive coordinator, Ward is being set up to avoid the sophomore slump. Bradley Locker from Pro Football Focus (PFF) sees it as well. Locker listed Ward as a breakout player for the 2026 season.
"The circumstances are now significantly better for the former No. 1 overall pick going into his second season. Ward has two major assets at receiver in No. 4 selection Carnell Tate as well as former Giant Wan’Dale Robinson, who can help attack every area of the field. Add in new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, and the pieces should be there for Ward’s sky-high talent to consistently materialize." said Locker.
The sophomore slump is real. Look at CJ Stroud in Houston. His rookie season was one of the best fans had ever seen from a rookie quarterback. Since his sophomore season though, Stroud has regressed and hasn’t been able to show that spark that he did in his first campaign.
While Ward’s rookie year didn't reach those heights, he did more than enough to show he can be a franchise quarterback, but he needed more help. That’s exactly what Tennessee did for him, and now it's up to Ward to prove he truly is the face of the franchise in Nashville.
There will be some growing pains. Then again, Daboll knows a thing or two about being a great offensive coordinator as he was the one who helped Josh Allen become a star quarterback. Fans are now hoping that Ward can be the next great quarterback that Daboll helps develop.
