The Tennessee Titans recently held their first open practice session of Organized Team Activities (OTAs). The star of the show was rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate. Tate made several big-time plays, according to those in attendance.
During one drill, the first-team offense took possession at the 50-yard line with 47 seconds remaining in a simulated hurry-up situation. Quarterback Cam Ward went four-of-six on the quick drive, completing a touchdown pass to Tate, per Jim Wyatt's round-up article. Tate wasn't done there.
Tate registered six receptions and three would-be touchdowns, including a deep play-action shot from Ward. The first-round wideout out of Ohio State routinely impressed. After that performance with media in attendance to document it, the Tate hype train has officially left the station in Tennessee.
Carnell Tate puts on a show at Tennessee Titans OTAs
The Titans drafted Tate at No. 4 overall to become a go-to weapon for Ward. It appears that chemistry is being built right away. Ward treated Tate as his favorite playmaker at the open-to-media practice session, which is a terrific sign for their relationship heading into training camp later this summer.
Tate registered 51 receptions for 875 yards and nine touchdowns in his final campaign with the Buckeyes. He averaged a career-high 17.2 yards per catch. Tate was credited with zero drops and routinely displayed the same strong hands Wyatt noted was evident at Tenenssee's practice.
Tate is expected to be Tennessee's starting boundary receiver in Week 1. The Titans have a stellar depth chart at wideout, with high-priced signing Wan'Dale Robinson and Calvin Ridley being the veteran starters opposite him. Sophomores Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike are also involved. Despite all that, Tate should emerge as the most talented pass catcher in the room.
The Titans have already held three OTA practices. They'll have three more this week, with another four sessions in June before mandatory minicamp (JUne 16-17). Tate should continue impressing offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Tate should continue growing and developing throughout the offseason. The momentum is already reaching unfathomable levels following the viral practice performance. Tate is already proving he possesses every trait needed to reach his exceptionally high ceiling.
