The Tennessee Titans were a bad offense in 2025. One of their top wide receivers was veteran Van Jefferson. Seen as a reliable veteran, Jefferson recorded 29 receptions for 350 yards and one touchdown.
The Titans did not re-sign Jefferson earlier this offseason. Instead, Mike Borgonzi upgraded the position by drafting Carnell Tate and signing Wan'Dale Robinson to a lucrative contract in free agency. Jefferson ended up joining the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal.
With offseason workouts in the books and training camp about to begin, the Commanders are learning what the Titans already knew about Jefferson. The experienced receiver is a roster-bubble player who finds ways to survive and earn reps. Jefferson heads into Commanders camp with some momentum, much like he did in Tennessee last offseason.

Perhaps Jefferson is better situated in Washington than he was in Tennessee. The Commanders also have question marks about their receiving core, but they at least have Terry McLaurin. Commanders expert Dean Jones laid out the scenario the former Titans receiver is facing this summer.
"Van Jefferson came in on the roster bubble, and that might still be the case," Jones of Riggo's Rag said. "However, with concerns about others in the receiver unit, and his strong start over Washington's early offseason program, the veteran has given himself a fighting chance of sealing his place on the 53-man roster. Jefferson has more experience than any receiver not named Terry McLaurin in Washington. That won't guarantee anything without a dominant summer, and the dynamic would completely shift again if Adam Peters brings in another dependable pass-catcher before Week 1."
The Titans were overly reliant on Jefferson last season. He became a mainstay in the lineup next to rookies Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike after Calvin Ridley got hurt. It's probably not a coincidence that Jefferson saw too much playing time on one of the worst passing offenses in the NFL.
Tennessee's receiving core underwent a much-needed makeover this offseason. New talents like Tate and Robinson should really help elevate franchise quarterback Cam Ward to new heights. Meanwhile Jefferson will continue trying to take advantage of another favorable situation for himself.
