There are no moral victories in the NFL, but there are some performances in a loss that undoubtedly mean more than others. The Tennessee Titans witnessed one of those from Cam Ward in a Week 8 overtime loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Even if the Titans are drifting further and further from any sort of playoff relevance, this season may no longer really be about that. Of course, the team still wants to win, and a win on the road against the Bengals would have been the stunner of the week.
The Titans made it closer than anyone expected, and Ward was the biggest reason why. After the Jeffery Simmons trade, he absolutely answered the biggest question facing this organization: Can he still be the franchise QB?
Cam Ward proves he's still got franchise QB qualities in shootout loss vs. Bengals
Without Carnell Tate, Cam Ward posted the first 300-yard passing game of his NFL career.
Was it a perfect or flawless performance? Absolutely not.
Even though it wasn't perfect, it was exactly what the doctor ordered for Ward and the Titans as a franchise. He completed 26-of-40 pass attempts for 304 yards, a pair of touchdown throws, and a passer rating of 104.6.
A sack late in the fourth quarter and a lost fumble earlier may have been the only true blemishes, and they were a tough pill to swallow in the moment given the way everyone in the Titans' fan base was manifesting a game-winning drive to close things out on the road, but it wasn't meant to be.
Still, the Jeffery Simmons trade sent a clear message, whether anyone likes it or wants to admit it: We aren't certain about Ward as the future of this team?
Why else do you trade away the best player on your team after just re-signing him in the offseason? And to be fair, had Ward really shown the organization that he was going to be the QB of this team's future? It's been a tough year, there's no question. But a performance like this against the Cincinnati Bengals...on the road?
That will rejuvenate the team's confidence.
Titans QB Cam Ward enjoys career-best showing in Week 8 overtime loss
The key for Ward is going to be stacking games. And we've seen what he's capable of.
The decision to trade away Simmons still stings, and the long-term implications of that move are not simply erased by one good game. However...it was a really good game.
For Ward to go toe-to-toe with Joe Burrow in a shootout is not a small deal.

Ward was out there hunting with the football. He was making plays. He was doing it short-handed and with the entire NFL world expecting the Titans to lay flat.
This absolutely feels like a pendulum-swinging moment for the Titans as a franchise. Ward looked like he was in danger of being replaced, or at least like the writing might be on the wall. This is how you rewrite the script and send a clear message to the front office.
Ward isn't going down without a fight.
