The Tennessee Titans became the first organization to fire their head coach during the 2025 campaign. Brian Callahan was dismissed following a Week 6 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders. The New York Giants became the second franchise to make an in-season coaching change when they fired Brian Daboll last week.
The Giants named offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as interim head coach. Interestingly enough, the Titans interviewed Kafka for their vacancy in 2024 before hiring Callahan. If the Titans possess interest in interviewing him again, the Giants could potentially block that request in January.
Kafka also named former tight ends coach Tim Kelly as his offensive coordinator. With Kelly joining Shane Bowen, the Giants now have two former Titans coaches as their current offensive and defensive coordinators. The Giants could also compete with the Titans for the same coaching candidates once January arrives.
Giants officially join Titans in head coaching search
The Giants and Titans will enter the offseason with similar appeal to potential coaching candidates. Both franchises will be searching for the right option to help guide their respective sophomore quarterbacks, Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart. The presences of Ward and Dart will be a selling point during the interview process.
The Titans are currently scheduled to possess the No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. The live order has the Giants penciled in at third overall. The final draft order could help the Titans and Giants separate themselves in discussions with potential coaches.
Both the Titans and Giants fired first-time head coaches in Callahan and Daboll. Could that mean both franchises prefer an experienced candidate this time around? If so, the Titans and Giants could possess interest in interviewing a similar candidate pool.
Giants owner John Mara typically identifies a unique list of coaching candidates. Hopefully their search won't overlap with the Titans' process. For now, the Giants and Titans are slated to enter their respective coaching searches with more similarities than differences.
