The Tennessee Titans may very well be the worst team in the NFL this year, as Brian Callahan's team somehow looked worse than a 2024 squad that was so pathetic they fell their way into the No. 1 overall pick and Cam Ward. After a humiliating loss to the 1-4 Las Vegas Raiders, this team had seen enough.
Callahan was fired after going just 4-19 in parts of two seasons. Callahan needed a zany miracle by way of the sliding Arizona Cardinals to avoid joining the New York Jets as 2025's only winless team and the unfortunate designation of matching Ken Whisenhunt's 3-20 record in charge.
Callahan, Whisenhunt, and Bill Peterson are a firmly established hydra consisting of the worst coaches in Oilers or Titans history. Callahan's record might be better, but his team may have been as noncompetitive as any in recent history for this franchise.
Titans finally fire Brian Callahan after pathetic 4-19 record
The four wins were actually less impressive than the record would indicate. His first ever win in 2024's Week 4 duel with the Miami Dolphins was the only such game with a margin of victory greater than five points, and he only managed to score more than 22 points in two of his four wins.
If Ward was thriving and the offense, which was alleged to be Callahan's specialty, was humming, Titans fans would likely put up with some of this nonsense. Instead, only the Browns have performed worse on offense in terms of points per game, and Ward has thrown just three touchdown passes.
New GM Mike Borgonzi will likely get his chance to pick a replacement sooner rather than later. With maximizing Ward's potential serving as the modus operandi for the entire organization, look for them to target coaches who have experience in working with quarterbacks.
Callahan was supposed to be that guy, but it appears as though his offensive success was more tied to Joe Burrow than the Titans believed initially. As such, the Titans have already put Ward behind the 8-ball early in his professional career. That's just a shame more than anything else.
