By now, most Tennessee Titans fans have heard the news that starting quarterback Will Levis has been benched. Going forward, it will be Mason Rudolph under center in hopes that Tennessee can build some momentum going into the offseason.
Wednesday, head coach Brian Callahan had the chance to address the media and, while he also delivered a NSFW rant in response to one question, he also spoke about Levis' benching and all that went into it.
"This was my decision to make," Callahan said when asked if the locker room had anything to do with benching Levis. He noted that the consistency simply hasn't been there with Levis, to this point.
"It wasn't an easy decision by any stretch ... There hasn't been enough consistency at this moment.
"This is all about trying to go out and win this week," he said. Callahan went on about how Rudolph and Levis have different playing styles and that he believes Rudolph will give this team the best chance to win right now.
Although Callahan did state that Levis was still "under contract" and "part of this team," he certainly didn't instill any hope that Levis would be part of the Titans' future.
Did Brian Callahan point to a Titans future without Will Levis?
When asked if Levis figures into the team's long-term plans, still, Callahan gave an answer without really giving an answer.
"I'm not worried about any long-term discussions at this point," Callahan said, again noting that he's most concerned about beating the Colts this weekend.
Callahan was asked multiple times, after the initial question, about Levis and whether he's part of the future of this franchise. In the same manner, Callahan shut those questions down and wouldn't give the media anything to run with.
More Titans news:
Now, by doing that, Callahan gave the media plenty to run with. By not committing to Levis being part of this team's future, Callahan essentially told us what we needed to know: Levis is not part of the Titans' future.
And, why would he be? He's a very likable person and great teammate, sure, but we've seen enough from Levis to know that he simply isn't cut out to be a franchise quarterback in this league.
The turnovers have been a huge issue, and nothing is improving. He continues to turn the ball over at an alarming rate, and because that hasn't gotten any better, he's seemingly lost his chance in Tennessee.
Now, we'll see what Rudolph can do for the remaining three weeks before the Titans ultimately look at going a different direction altogether.
