It was the worst kept secret in last year’s NFL Draft that the Tennessee Titans were going to bring in Miami quarterback Cam Ward as their hopeful franchise quarterback. With the Titans having a ton of roster holes last year and Ward being in his first year as a pro, fans could not expect him to flourish right out of the gate.
Not to mention, Ward worked with head coach Brian Callahan for a short amount of time during the season before he was shown the door early on due to underperforming performances by the team overall. Despite the challenges that Ward had to endure, he still showed fans a potential bright future in Nashville.
With extremely limited help, Ward still managed to throw for over 3,000 yards and he had 15 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. For a rookie in a tough situation, that is actually overachieving. Heading into his second season with a coaching staff that has plenty of quality experience in the league, Ward should take a step forward.
Bleacher Report places Titans' QB situation on list fans don't want to see
The biggest acquisition that the Titans made for Ward was bringing in Brian Daboll as the offensive coordinator. Tennessee did have to wait a bit to get Daboll as he was in the running to potentially become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, but they decided to promote Joe Brady.
While Titans fans are optimistic that Ward will take another step forward in 2026, there are some who still believe that the sophomore quarterback still has to prove he can be a franchise guy.
Brad Gagnon from Bleacher Report put the Titans on a list that consists of the “worst quarterback situations going into the 2026 NFL Draft” and Tennessee is at No. 10.
"Why it's Bad: As the No. 1 overall pick in 2025, Cam Ward averaged a league-worst 5.9 yards per attempt. He was the lowest-rated passer among those with more than 10 starts and took an NFL-high 55 sacks." said Gagnon.
"Outlook: Critically, Ward posted six touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 103.8 passer rating in the final four weeks of his rookie year. It's probably a toss-up as to whether he becomes a franchise quarterback or fades away." said Gagnon.
There’s no denying that Ward had his rookie struggles, but what rookie quarterback doesn’t? Not to mention, the supporting cast around him was lackluster. His leading receiver in terms of yardage was tight Chig Okonkwo (560 yards). Being brought down 55 times as well certainly doesn’t help him grow as a player, and Mike Borgonzi has to continue to fix the offensive line.
To say that Tennessee has one of the worst quarterback situations is laughable because of what Ward was able to do with limited support. Let’s not forget either, the Titans brought in Mitch Trubisky who has familiarity with Daboll’s offense from their time with the Bills. Trubisky is a fantastic veteran in terms of being a locker room presence, and having plenty of playing experience to help Ward grow.
Obviously, the Titans don’t have one of the best QB situations until proven otherwise through on-field play, but to say that they have one of the worst is completely wrong. As long as the front office brings in young talent through the upcoming NFL Draft, Ward will have a great chance to show what he can do with more help on the offense.
