Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi provided an update on the team's head coaching search while meeting with the media last week. The official search will begin in January at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign. Borgonzi and president Chad Brinker have likely identified some preliminary candidates, however.
“We’re in the process now,” Borgonzi said. “But one thing that me and Chad (Brinker) have talked about is the GM and the head coach working together every day. So, I think it’s imperative that we make this decision, who’s the best leader of this organization coming forward? They have a working relationship with the GM, myself.”
With Borgonzi allegedly leading the search and possibly looking for an experienced option he possesses a relationship with, one potential candidate sticks out. Current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spent eight seasons (2013-17, 2022-2024) alongside Borgonzi in KC. Nagy could emerge as a candidate who checks all the boxes.
Chiefs OC Matt Nagy could be Titans' top head coaching candidate
Borgonzi inherited former head coach Brian Callahan from previous general manager Ran Carthon. Callahan was fired just six games into Borgonzi's tenure as GM. The next coach will be hand-selected by the current decision maker.
Relationships and experience could be imperative to the candidate who separates himself from the field. Nagy, who also spent four campaigns (2018-21) as the Chicago Bears’ head coach, would almost certainly possess a healthy working relationship with Borgonzi given their shared time together. It would be shocking if the Titans didn't submit a request to the Chiefs to interview Nagy when he becomes eligible.
The Titans will undergo another roster rehaul this offseason as they continue building the team around franchise quarterback Cam Ward. The next head coach must share Borgonzi's vision regarding how to attack their personnel needs via free agency and the draft. As a head coaching choice, Nagy would be totally aligned with Borgonzi. That could matter to owner Amy Adams Strunk.
