The Tennessee Titans enjoyed their best defensive performance of the season in Sunday's Week 6 win over the Indianapolis Colts. They collectively forced four turnovers and sacked Colts QB Daniel Jones on six occasions. Don't underestimate the role veteran linebacker Cody Barton is playing in Robert Saleh's defense.

The Titans appreciate Barton for his off-field leadership and maturity. On the field, he's an excellent communicator who consistently ensures the defense is aligned correctly. Sunday, you saw a Titans defense that is getting more comfortable with Saleh's scheme. Barton has played a valued role in the process.

Barton is tied for fourth on the defense in total tackles (29). The only three Titans defenders to play more snaps than him this season are Jeffery Simmons, Alontae Taylor and Anthony Hill Jr. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley continues to trust Barton to execute the defense.

The Titans are allowing the 13th-fewest points per game (21.5). Rookie linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. has been a revelation. In truth, the Titans probably wouldn't trust the first-year linebacker with so much responsibility if he didn't have a reliable veteran like Barton he can rely on.

That's among the primary reasons the Titans continue to play Barton ahead of 2025 breakout linebacker Cedric Gray heading into Week 7. Hill is making fewer rookie mistakes because of who aligns beside him. Barton is among the commanding communicators on a defense showing weekly improvement.

The Titans made Jones uncomfortable in the pocket on Sunday. They limited running back Jonathan Taylor's explosive-play ability. Barton was an asset both in pass coverage and versus the run.

Pro Football Focus only credited Barton with allowing three receptions on six targets. That means Jones only completed 50 percent of the passes he threw in Barton's direction. The Colts' passer rating was below 90 when targeting the veteran linebacker.

Barton also had numerous tackles including a notable run stop. He hasn't allowed a single touchdown in coverage this season. Despite playing a hefty 329 snaps, Barton also hasn't been whistled for a single penalty. He's both disciplined and prepared.

Tennessee's defense undeniably turned a corner versus the Colts on Sunday. They powered the Nashville-based club to its first victory of 2026. Barton's on-field production is starting to match his off-field preparation. Stop undervaluing Barton's contributions.
