The Tennessee Titans have had months to start surveying potential head coaches after parting ways with Brian Callahan, but it doesn't look like the initial crop of coaches will do much in the way of making sure that Cam Ward can reach his maximum potential.
Mike Borgonzi is already leaning on his connections with the Kansas City Chiefs, as he wants to take a look at both of Andy Reid's coordinators in offensive mind Matt Nagy and defensive stalwart Steve Spagnuolo. One of his other top candidates is another defensive mind who stunk as a head coach previously.
The Titans are requesting to interview Vance Joseph, former head coach of the Denver Broncos who returned to Colorado to serve as Sean Payton's defensive coordinator. Once again, it looks like Tennessee is opting for a safer option instead of shooting for the stars.
Titans requesting interview with Broncos DC Vance Joseph for head coaching role
Joseph is in charge of a Broncos defense that many believe is the best in the league. With Pat Surtain II developing into a Defensive Player of the Year candidate under him and the pass rush nearly setting records for sacks, Joseph has proven he can whip up a solid defense in the NFL.
Joseph was 11-21 as Broncos head coach, a stint that saw him rank 27th and 24th in points per game. In terms of getting the most out of Ward, Joseph does not seem like the guy who is going to take No. 1 to new heights as a passer.
However, Joseph supporters will claim he never got a quarterback worth a damn in Denver. Between the Paxton Lynch error in the draft, Case Keenum overpay in free agency, and names like Trevor Siemian and Brock Osweiler mixed in, Joseph's defense with a player as talented as Ward might be worth watching.
Tennessee's coaching search is far from over, and Joseph isn't exactly buying property in Nashville at this point in time, but if he is at the forefront of Borgonzi's thinking, fans might ask for someone that has a higher ceiling for the sake of working with Ward.
