The Tennessee Titans were one of the heavy favorites to add a big-name running back this offseason, either through the 2026 NFL Draft or via free agency. Well, that didn't end up happening. Instead, they drafted a Day 3 back in Nicholas Singleton and are looking to work veterans Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears for likely one more season.

Fans weren't necessarily optimistic about another season with the duo of Pollard and Spears. Fast forward to training camp reports and one preseason game, and the Tyjae Spears hype train has officially left the station.

Spears had an electric run on the opening drive against the 49ers in the first preseason game, spinning out of a tackle into the open field for a 25-yard gain. During a practice session earlier this week, the former Tulane standout caught a touchdown out of the backfield on a wheel route from quarterback Cam Ward per Jim Wyatt. Wyatt also noted that Spears logged six receptions during Monday's practice, a training camp high for the running back.

The Tennessee Titans may finally be getting their Tyjae Spears breakout season

Reports of Spears getting a lot of receptions, lining up out wide as a receiver, and his pass protection skills certainly suggest that the former third-round pick will be very involved in this offense, not only as the primary third-down back, but possibly on early downs, too. Spears' slippery play style makes him a real threat anytime he gets into open space, so it makes sense that he's getting so many targets. It's also important to note that he and Pollard split the reps evenly in the preseason opener.

Titans offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has made it abundantly clear that he intends to establish the run, in case the opening preseason drive didn't make that clear. The offensive line seems to be a better run-blocking unit under offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo. This would be Spears' first shot with an adequate offensive line, and it could be just what he needs to finally take that next step.

Obviously through all the hype and anticipation, Spears' season will come down to his health and availability. The flashes have been there over the last few seasons, but frustrating nagging injuries have kept him sidelined at the worst possible times. If Spears can manage to stay on the field, there's no doubt he can be a top playmaker for the 2026 Titans.
