When the news broke from Field Yates that the Cleveland Browns and star edge rusher Myles Garrett had agreed on a contract restructure, the chatter started up once again on whether or not the reigning Defensive Player of the Year would become available for trade. While it would be extremely hard to see the Browns sending Garrett away, you can never say never when it comes to the NFL.
With the offseason the Tennessee Titans have had up to this point, the emphasis has been building up the defense for Robert Saleh and they have brought in a lot of familiarity via players he has worked with in the past. If Saleh can duplicate the defense he had with the New York Jets, he will be in a great position because having Brian Daboll and Cam Ward taking care of the offense will take pressure off that unit.
While Titans fans should be pleased about the offseason that Mike Borgonzi has put together so far, there are still opportunities that can take it the extra mile. With this mysterious contract restructure involving the Browns and Garrett, the Titans were recently listed as a potential landing spot for Garrett via trade.
Tennessee Titans listed as possible landing spot should Myles Garrett be traded
Connor Orr from Sports Illustrated put together a list of possible landing spots for Garrett should he be shockingly traded by the Browns, and the Titans made it onto Orr’s list.
"New Titans head coach Robert Saleh was twice a candidate for the Browns’ head coaching job and obviously has an idea of how he would integrate Garrett into the fold as one of his defensive centerpieces. Tennessee has feverishly remade its defense this offseason and remains a favorite locale for players both during and after their playing career." said Orr.
Garrett is a Hall of Fame bound player right now at this point in his career. He is consistently one of, if not the best defensive player in the NFL every single season. While he has been a superstar since coming into the league, he hasn’t had much success beyond the regular season because of how poor Cleveland has been around him.
With the direction that the Titans are heading in at this moment, if they managed to pull off a league-shocking trade to bring Garrett to Nashville to play under Robert Saleh’s defense, Tennessee would arguably have a top-10 defense, if not top five right off the bat.
Now, obviously there are two factors that go into this kind of setup. First, would the Browns want to actually trade Garrett? Even though Cleveland would get a haul for Garrett, trading arguably the best defensive player in football would be unthinkable. Then again, we have seen the unthinkable happen before.
Second, the Titans would have to cough up a huge package that would include multiple first round picks, extra draft capital, and maybe even a player. That’s the type package that they would maybe need to put together to even start a conversation. Tennessee is rebuilding and who knows if they would be willing to take a huge risk for one player while losing out on future resources to keep building the roster.
It doesn't feel like a move Borgonzi would make.
