The Tennessee Titans are struggling in the secondary. There's no greater example than the Week 7 loss in which the Cleveland Browns accumulated nearly 500 yards of offense, with Deshaun Watson throwing for 308. Mike Borgonzi invested heavily at cornerback in free agency, but his investments haven't paid full dividends.

The Titans have benched $58 million cornerback Alontae Taylor in consecutive weeks. The position appears to be a long-term problem that requires fixing. One recent trade-article idea achieves that.

Chicago Bears expert Ryan Heckman recently proposed a trade involving the Titans. Heckman has the Bears sending cornerback Jaylon Johnson to the Titans in exchange for TE Daniel Bellinger and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Perhaps Johnson would solve the Titans' cornerback woes.

The rebuilding Titans probably aren't interested in parting with draft capital, but this proposal comes with an intriguing caveat. It also gets the Titans out of a bad three-year, $24 million contract for Bellinger. Bellinger has performed below expectations despite his familiarity with OC Brian Daboll.

It's worth noting Johnson hasn't met expectations for the Bears in 2026. The two-time Pro Bowl cornerback is still 27, however. Maybe a change of scenery for Johnson would course-correct his current form.

Johnson is signed through 2027 on a previous four-year, $76 million extension. Would Borgonzi be interested in acquiring another high-priced cornerback after paying Taylor $58 million, and also signing Cor'Dale Flott to a $45 million contract? With one year left on Johnson's deal, it would be a gamble.

Titans are struggling badly in the secondary

The Titans are allowing the 9th-most passing yards per game (233.0). Even worse, opposing quarterbacks are completing 69.2% of their passing attempts. That's second-worst in the NFL. That was a persistent problem during the preseason that has carried over.

And now their most expensive cornerback has been benched in consecutive games. The Titans may move Taylor to nickel cornerback when he returns. They were adamant about his ability to play outside when they signed him to a lucrative three-year contract. Taylor's addition currently looks like a massive miscalculation by Borgonzi and Robert Saleh.

The proposed trade sending Johnson to the Titans is intriguing. It potentially solves the cornerbacks issue while shedding the Bellinger contract. It's probably too creative to actually come to fruition, but expect the Titans to eventually address cornerback as the long-term problem it currently is.
