The Tennessee Titans spent a league-high amount of money in free agency this past offseason. Despite Mike Borgonzi's spending spree, the team enters Sunday's Week 6 game versus the Indianapolis Colts at 0-5. They seemingly regret one of their big free-agent additions.
Cornerback Alontae Taylor was made a healthy inactive on Sunday, the team announced 90 minutes prior to kickoff. It seems that head coach Robert Saleh chose to bench Taylor. Coach Saleh previously expressed displeasure with the cornerback's play in Week 5.
The Titans signed Taylor to a three-year, $58 million contract. They gave the Winchester, Tennessee native $42 million in guaranteed money. It sure feels like the Titans regret signing Taylor to such a high-priced contract.
Titans make $58 million CB Alontae Taylor a healthy scratch for Week 6
Taylor has been extremely disappointing for the Titans this season. The former Tennessee Volunteers cornerback has been credited with allowing 21 receptions on 24 targets this season, per Pro Football Focus. That means opposing quarterbacks are completing 87.5 percent of attempts thrown in his direction, with a passer rating 117.9. Taylor does not have a single pass breakup or interception.
Taylor played both boundary cornerback and nickel throughout his time with the Saints. The Titans made the decision to make Taylor a full-time outside cornerback after rewarding him with a $58 million contract. It seemingly hasn't gone smoothly in Coach Saleh's system.
Taylor played out a four-year rookie contract with the New Orleans Saints. He compiled four interceptions and 52 PBUs throughout that tenure. Again, he hasn't broken up a single pass in Tennessee yet.
Titans to start a backup CB in Week 6 after Robert Saleh benches Alontae Taylor
The Titans will likely start Joshua Williams in Taylor's place. Williams is active for the first time after missing the opening five contests with an injury. He was on IR for Weeks 1-4, and the Titans decided against activating him for Week 5. Micah Robinson is an alternative option opposite fellow struggling starter Cor'Dale Flott.
Flott, who signed a $45 million contract himself in free agency, has also struggled. The Titans are currently getting nothing from their $103 million offseason investment in new starting cornerbacks. Coach Saleh previously said it would take time for Taylor and Flott to acclimate to his scheme.
Despite that, patience is obviously already running thin.
