Titans may have to get creative when searching for RT solution next offseason

Are we bracing for another season of Nicholas Petit-Frere?

Nicholas Petit-Frere enjoyed one of this best games since being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in last Monday's victory over the Miami Dolphins, but he's still the weak link on this offensive line.

Rookie left tackle JC Latham has been the only above average pass-blocker on Tennessee's struggling offensive line when you look at how many pressures Pro Football Focus says they allow relative to their position.

Even after the performance in Miami, the gap between Latham and Petit-Frere is immense. Latham has only allowed nine pressures this season, compared to Petit-Frere, who has allowed 20, which ties him for the 49th-ranked pass-blocking tackle out of 51 eligible players.

The best thing Petit-Frere has going for him is that he is cheap and under contract through the 2025 season on his original four-year rookie agreement.

Aside from that, the Titans should be turning over every rock to see if they can find someone to improve their right tackle situation next offseason.

Unfortunately, the options already appear thin.

The free agency class is weak, headed by veterans Morgan Moses and Trent Brown. Unfortunately, Moses will be 34, and Brown was recently placed on season-ending IR after tearing a tendon in his right knee.

This is also not a terrific year to need an offensive tackle in the draft. Over the last week, draft analysts have pointed out that they believe this is a weak class once you get outside the top 10 picks. The Athletic's Dane Brugler also pointed out that the tackle class is getting a downgrade because scouts tell him that some popular college offensive tackles are being looked at as guards in the NFL.

His quote was, "Tackle is going to be really interesting, because there are some tackles on the board that you like, but are they going to play tackle in the NFL. You know, Will Campbell from LSU, Kelvin Banks from Texas, these guys are good tackles at the college level, but any time I talk with a scout about these guys it's like 'well, ok, but we kind of like him at guard better.'...So this might not be a great class for offensive tackles."

That is not what Titans fans want to hear, but you can't force something that isn't there.

Unless someone with a big contract gets cut this offseason, or unless the Titans have a very high pick and can assure that they get Bill Callahan's hand-picked tackle again this year, it sounds like the Titans might be stuck with another year of Petit-Frere, or other in-house solutions.
