Tennessee Titans add another free agent defensive lineman to the mix
By Will Lomas
The Tennessee Titans re-signed former second-round pick Marlon Davidson to add depth to the defensive line.
Davidson signed with the Titans late last year, but he ended up starting three games and playing more than 150 snaps for Tennessee's defense. In Dennard Wilson's defense, he projects to move around the line similar to what they expect from Sebastian Joseph-Day.
I'm always going to be a fan of signing young players with a great draft pedigree because I believe that those players might fall short of the expectations they had coming out of college, but they can still turn into good players.
Davidson's role coming out of college was always going to be an issue because he spent a lot of time playing defensive end despite being 6'3, 300+ lb. He struggled with his transition to the NFL, but after a few years of development, he seems to have started to figure out exactly where he fits.
He is about to turn 26 which means that he still has time to learn and develop, and he won't be thrown into the fire like he was last year. Right now the projected starters along the defensive line are Jeffery Simmons, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and T'Vondre Sweat. Behind them, the Titans seem to like Keondre Coburn as a backup nose tackle behind Sweat, and Davidson fills in nicely as a guy who can come in and spell SJD or Simmons.
The Titans needed to get bigger, better, and deeper on the defensive line and they have done a good job of doing that this offseason despite not making it a priority in free agency. Their big swing and riskiest move is drafting T'Vondre Sweat high in the second round, but that was their guy and they feel like he can be a star so we will see.
With Andrus Peat off the market, the question for Tennessee Titans fans is whether they will go after a wide receiver or an EDGE next. The smart money is on receiver, but someone like Carl Lawson could end up making a lot of sense if the Titans decide they want to add another EDGE.
