Former Titans QB listed as training camp winner despite not doing a single thing
The preseason is underway in the NFL and former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has yet to find a new landing spot for the 2024 season. That might not be the case much longer, as teams will start to evaluate what they currently have at the quarterback position and decide if they feel comfortable with those players or not.
As Alex Kay of Bleacher Report pointed out, Tannehill is a massive winner of training camp and the kicker is that he hasn't done anything to earn that title. Kay writes that Tannehill is winning training camp due to the backup quarterbacks throughout the league not performing well during the preseason openers.
"Due to these disappointing preseason showings, teams may be more willing to shell out some cash to land a steady hand like Tannehill. His presence could bolster a quarterback room before training camp concludes and help a squad feel more comfortable about its chances to remain afloat if a starting passer goes down.
While the 2019 Pro Bowler hasn't been the most available player over the last two seasons—he has made just 20 starts since the beginning of the 2022 campaign due to injury and ineffectiveness—he's, arguably, the most talented proven veteran still on the open market."
Ryan Tannehill's stock is trending upward after Week 1 of preseason
The Titans traded for Tannehill during the 2019 offseason and he eventually took over as the starting quarterback after Marcus Mariota continued to struggle in the role. Tannehill helped lead the Titans to the AFC Championship Game later that season with Tennessee unable to topple the Chiefs in the title game.
Two years later, the Titans were the best team in the AFC, winning the number one seed in the AFC playoffs but sadly getting knocked out in the first round of postseason action. Overall, Tannehill spent five years in Nashville and his only losing season was this past year when he went 3-5 as a starter.
With the Titans turning the quarterback keys over to Will Levis, there wasn't a need to bring Tannehill back. It's been a bit surprising to see him not get signed by anyone considering he'd be a reliable backup option for a team but, as noted, it's likely that other teams will start looking at their current backup or third-string situations and see that Tannehill is most definitely an upgrade.
While Tannehill might not be donning the Titans colors anymore in 2024, fans still respect the guy and hope to see him land in a good situation (as long as he's not succeeding against Tennessee, that is).
