Eight is enough for a Titans quarterback change?

After dropping a pair of seven-point decisions the first two weeks of the season in which the team owned halftime leads, that was hardly the case on Sunday at home against the Green Bay Packers. The Tennessee Titans fell behind 10-7 in the first quarter and never caught up. The 30-14 loss dropped the club’s record to 6-21 in its last 27 contests.

That’s obviously not all on the current regime. However, there are eyes on the team’s young quarterback, who is off to a horrific start this season.

It’s been a rough three weeks for quarterback Will Levis

When asked if Will Levis would remain the team’s starting quarterback, Titans head coach Brian Callahan (via ESPN’s Turron Davenport) had this to say:

“Oh, yeah. We’ve also got to play better around him. I’m not going to overreact to an interception. Those things happen, guys throw picks, we just can’t give it to their team. It’s a killer. But we’ve not played a complete game in any phase at any point yet.”

Yes, there is plenty of blame to go around. Tennessee’s special teams have been a problem as well. They had punts blocked in consecutive contests to start the season. On Sunday, it was defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons who committed a special teams gaffe. Simmons was whistled for defensive holding on a missed field goal on 4th-and-4 that awarded the Packers a new set of downs.

However, the monkey in the room has been the play of Levis. He’s completing 68.1 percent of his passes for 579 yards and four touchdowns.

He’s also thrown five interceptions, two of which have been returned for touchdowns. He’s fumbled once in each game this season, and lost all three. He’s been sacked 15 times, eight of those on Sunday. All told, Tennessee has turned over the ball a league-leading eight times, all by their second-year quarterback.

Still, veteran wideout DeAndre Hopkins has Levis’s back (via Davenport).

“I wouldn’t want anyone else out there on the field the way he prepares and goes about his day. I think he’s going to learn from his mistakes. He hasn’t even played a full season. It’s going to come with time. But it’s not just Will.”

Just how patient will Callahan be if there’s another mistake-prone performance? The Titans are in South Florida next Monday to take on the struggling Dolphins. Mason Rudolph, a super sub for the Steelers late last season, is waiting in the wings. Stay tuned.
