On Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans introduced new general manager Mike Borgonzi in his opening press conference.
Among the topics Borgonzi covered, none was more important than touching on the quarterback position. And, when speaking on the future at quarterback, Borgonzi of course had to bring up third-year pro Will Levis.
Borgonzi did note that the Titans are going to keep options open:
“We’re keeping an open mind on this, but the quarterback is the most important position in sports. So you have to solidify the quarterback position."
But, he did go on to say Tennessee is willing to give Levis every chance.
"We’re going to turn over every rock, whether that’s free agency, draft or we have quarterbacks on the roster here. Will, we’re going to give him every opportunity to play and to compete. But we’re going to attack this thing. We’re going to be relentless attacking this until we find the answer," he said.
Titans fans and Mike Borgonzi, alike, know that Will Levis actually has no chance to be the quarterback solution
Going into the 2024 season, the Titans were picked by some to be a sneaky team in the AFC. But, it all hinged on the quarterback play. If Levis played well, then the Titans could be a tough team.
The roster was pretty strong at most positions, especially on defense. All of the work put into that side of the ball, over the offseason, was about to pay off. And, in a way, it certainly did. The Titans finished last season no. 2 in yards allowed.
But, the Achilles heel of this football team was, in fact, Levis.
More Titans news:
Any fan who watched the team last year understands that Levis would have to make a monumental jump in his third year if he was to have any shot at starting for this team on a long-term basis. By all accounts through two years, Levis simply doesn't have it. He just doesn't.
His decision-making was about as bad as a quarterback could get. The turnovers were unacceptable in terms of context and timing. Levis made costly mistake after costly mistake; so often that it became comedy at times. You couldn't make up the things he was doing. It felt like a bad dream.
So, for Borgonzi to say he's going to give Levis every chance is a bit of a stretch. He's kidding himself. He has to know Levis just isn't cutting it, nor will he ever.
With the no. 1 pick, maybe the Titans don't go with Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. Maybe they go Travis Hunter and, instead, pick up a quarterback like Sam Darnold or Kirk Cousins. Maybe they go Russell Wilson. Perhaps, this coming season, the Titans try and win with a veteran.
Or, maybe all of this is a smokescreen and Tennessee does go quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. For now, we can only be certain that Borgonzi was just trying to say the right things.
Levis ain't it, as they say.
