It seemed inevitable, but the Tennessee Titans finally decided to fire Brian Callahan a few days ago. This was a move Titans fans had been bracing and hoping for.
The organization has a ways to go as far as changing the culture, but at one point, they had what many thought was the right guy in the building in former head coach Mike Vrabel. Now the head coach of the New England Patriots, Vrabel is preparing to take on his former team in a Week 7 matchup.
Vrabel was asked about Callahan's firing during some time with the media, this week, and he offered some heartfelt perspective on the situation.
Mike Vrabel didn't hide the human side of the equation after Brian Callahan was fired
Vrabel told the New England media that he reached out to Callahan after he heard the news. Mostly, this was because of how much it meant to him when people similarly reached out after the Titans had fired him.
“Nobody texts you when you lose,” he said.
Even though Vrabel is no longer in the building, like Callahan, we can still respect these words from the former Tennessee head coach. Despite fans wanting Callahan gone and despite the abysmal 4-19 record during his tenure, the human aspect is still worth bringing up.
"There's a human element to this that I don't want to forget," Vrabel also noted.
As much as Vrabel is known for his gritty, tough coaching style, he reminds us that he still understands the personal side of this business. In a classy move that's rarely talked about, the fact Vrabel reached out to Callahan is a refreshing reminder that this business is still made up of nothing more than human beings.
Now in their post-Vrabel and post-Callahan era, the Titans can look ahead to exactly which candidates make the most sense for taking this franchise back to postseason contention.
Early indications and rumors might scare Titans fans to death, but we'll have to wait until the thick of the offseason to take reports for any more than pure speculation at this point.
For now, it's Mike McCoy who has been handed the reins and does bring a little head coaching experience with him. Can McCoy and the rest of this staff figure out how to kickstart the development with Cam Ward and the other youngsters?
