The Tennessee Titans' front office believes it is imperative to possess familiarity with the players you're acquiring. Several of the veterans acquired by Mike Borgonzi either previously played for himself, Robert Saleh, or Brian Daboll. That takes much of the guesswork out of the roster-building process.
Saleh knows how good John Franklin-Myers and Jermaine Johnson are, and the front office aggressively targeted them. Daboll knows how to make Wan'Dale Robinson a 1,000-yard receiver and how to use Daniel Bellinger to create mismatches in personnel, so the front office targeted them aggressively.
This isn't limited to coaches with hands-on experience, as shown by their efforts to bring in Alontae Taylor (Dave Ziegler was with the New Orleans Saints in 2024) and Joshua Williams (Borgonzi was with the Kansas City Chiefs when they drafted him).
Latest trade buzz provides Titans with opportunity to pursue another familiar target
There are more than a dozen examples of those connections this offseason, but that doesn't mean the Titans are finished using that blueprint. If an ideal fit became available, then you can bet that this front office would consider the possibility. That is why it is interesting to see Chiefs DB Chamarri Conner pop up in this article about veterans potentially on the chopping block.
"Conner might not lose snaps so much as he could end up displaced into more traditional safety alignments; the Chiefs already started to do that last season. But with incumbent youngster Jaden Hicks and free agent acquisition Alohi Gilman, safety is also a crowded room. Conner's 1,021 snaps from last season are unlikely to be repeated."
Conner is being talked about as a safety, but in Saleh's defense, he would most likely be competing with Marcus Harris for the nickel corner role.
Borgonzi was in the front office that drafted Conner and watched him play his best football for a year before he joined the Titans as GM. He knows exactly what Conner does well, and if he signs off on his work ethic and abilities, then it would be a great addition for the Titans.
At best, Conner would push Harris for the nickel job and potentially even beat him out. If it doesn't work out like that, the Titans would still add proven depth to a position where they are severely lacking that right now. His addition would also mean that any talks of Taylor playing in the slot would die off, and it wouldn't have to be the backup plan anymore.
This move would be cheap, and it would give young depth and clarity to a room that needs a little bit more of that before the season rolls around.
