Jarvis Brownlee trade leaves no excuse for Brian Callahan's next crucial decision

The Tennessee Titans are moving forward after trading cornerback Jarvis Brownlee to the New York Jets earlier this week. General manager Mike Borgonzi, who inherited Brownlee from previous GM Ran Carthon, obviously didn't see him as an ideal for the team he is building. His departure should create an opportunity for a player Borgonzi acquired himself.

The Titans possessed the No. 1 priority on the wire following cut-down day. Borgonzi claimed two cornerbacks, adding Jalyn Armour-Davis and Samuel Womack to the active 53-man roster. Both players began the season inactive, but Armour-Davis made his Titans debut in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Armour-Davis was the most popular player in the entire NFL on the waiver wire. Four teams attempted to claim him following his release from the Baltimore Ravens. After trading Brownlee, the Titans need to insert Armour-Davis into their lineup permanently to find out if he can be a long-term solution.

Titans must insert CB Jalyn Armour-Davis into the lineup following Jarvis Brownlee trade

Armour-Davis entered the league with some pedigree. He won a National Championship at Alabama and was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Recurring injuries and inconsistencies ultimately derailed his time in Baltimore, leading to the Ravens making the tough decision to cut him earlier this offseason.

After spending a couple of weeks acclimating to the Titans' defense, Armour-Davis played 19 snaps in Week 3 with Brownlee sidelined with an ankle injury. Now that Brownlee has been traded, Armour-Davis doesn't have to worry about him reclaiming his spot in the lineup. Instead, he must defeat Darrell Baker Jr. in a competition for playing time opposite L'Jarius Sneed.

Baker out-snapped Armour-Davis 38-19 against the Colts. It was understandable, given the ramp-up period that remains ongoing. But as soon as Armour-Davis is completely comfortable with Dennard Wilson's defense, the Titans need to spend this wasted campaign finding out if young players such as himself are long-term roster solutions.
