The Tennessee Titans officially fired head coach Brian Callahan on Monday. General manager Mike Borgonzi needed to have a plan in place to adjust the staff to account for the staffers who were dismissed alongside him. Mike McCoy was named interim coach in Callahan's place.
Offensive line coach Bill Callahan, Brian's father, also left the team, per Paul Kuharsky. Surprisingly. offensive coordinator Nick Holz was retained despite his close ties to the Callahan's. Keeping Holz limited the amount of shuffling that was required.
Having analyzed the Titans' current staff, this is how the Titans made an in-season Callahan firing work amidst the shuffling that was required.
How the Titans made sense of firing Brian Callahan during the 2025 season
Interim HC: Mike McCoy
McCoy checked off two huge boxes for the Titans. First, he has head coaching experience, so he knows exactly what the day-to-day operation looks like. Equally as important, he was serving as a senior offensive assistant, which means that it shouldn't be hard to have someone take over whatever duties he was performing.
Special teams coordinator Bones Fassel was an alternative who is a natural leader, but promoting him to interim could have hindered any chance the team had of retaining him next season. Whoever the team's next full-time coach is needs to make every attempt to bring Fassel back as the STC.
Bo Hardegree will almost certainly continue calling offensive plays. The Titans won't want to give rookie quarterback Cam Ward a third play caller in his first season. Hardegree was retained.
Offensive line coach: Scott Fuchs
Fuchs has been working his way up the career ladder for 25 years. Over that quarter century, he has been the offensive line coach at North Dakota State, Wyoming, Buffalo, and Kansas, among others. Fuchs had a strong argument to land a job coaching offensive linemen in the SEC or in the NFL before joining the Titans as Bill Callahan's assistant offensive line coach this year.
Fuchs was a no-brainer to take over the elder Callahan's spot, and if things go well, it would be smart for the next head coach to strongly consider keeping him on next year's staff.
Assistant offensive line coach: Matt Jones
Jones is another coach who has spent over a decade working his way up the ladder as an offensive line coach, and he has the perfect credentials to be elevated midseason.
