The Tennessee Titans appointed former Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi as their new GM on Friday afternoon. Together, Borgonzi and president of football operations Chad Brinker will collaborate on repairing a roster that finished a league-worst 3-14 in 2024. That process begins by owning the No. 1 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
While the Titans must draft a difference-maker with that selection, the roster also requires veteran upgrades. Borgonzi, an experienced front-office who had been in Kansas City since 2009, should be a tremendous help in that area. With that in mind, we've identified three free agents Borgonzi may target in March.
Trey Smith, RG
One of Borgonzi's top priorities this offseason will be upgrading the right side of Tennessee's offensive line. It was tied with quarterback for the Achilles heel of an offense that scored a sixth-worst 18.3 points per contest.
That could make Chiefs right guard Trey Smith an obvious target. A University of Tennessee alumni that hails from nearby Humboldt, Smith is a multi-time Super Bowl champion and debut Pro Bowler (2024). The Chiefs are projected to possess a bottom-10 amount of money in effective cap space, and Spotrac calculates Smith's market at $19.7 million per season. The Titans might spend big on addressing their lackluster offensive line.
Nick Bolton, LB
Linebacker is a secondary need for Tennessee this offseason, but nonetheless, it's a position that may require some attention. The only obvious starter is Kenneth Murray Jr., who may qualify as a cap casualty this offseason. Young players like Jack Gibbens, Cedric Gray, and James Williams have to earn full-time roles on a weekly basis.
The Chiefs have declined opportunities to sign Nick Bolton to an extension. The former Missouri standout is about to witness his four-year rookie contract expire after enjoying his third 100-tackle season. Bolton would help fortify the middle of Dennard Wilson's defense.
Charles Omenihu, EDGE
The Titans may get creative when addressing the pass rush this offseason. Starters Harold Landry III and Arden Key are both potential cap casualties. It's doubtful Tennessee would part with both of them, but a rotational rusher may be added, hopefully in addition to a player with high-end abilities.
Kansas City's Charles Omenihu could be that No. 3 defender in the rotation. Omenihu spent the majority of the 2024 campaign impacted by a torn ACL injury suffered in the 2023 AFC Championship Game. He should be closer to 2023 health next season, when he recorded seven sacks and 29 pressures.
