Tennessee Titans have NFL’s worst backup quarterback situation
It’s crucial to have a reliable backup quarterback and the Tennessee Titans, unfortunately, don’t have that. This isn’t to say that Logan Woodside is a bad quarterback, but rather unproven.
Woodside, a former seventh-round pick out of Toledo, hopped around until he got to Nashville and he made his NFL debut last year. He finished his 2020 season with six appearances under his belt while rushing for 10 yards and throwing for seven yards. Not exactly a great sample size and with a former second-round pick (DeShone Kizer) breathing down his neck for the backup job, Woodside has a lot to prove this summer.
According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, the Titans have the worst backup quarterback situation in the NFL. Benjamin wrote:
"If you’re not a Titans fan, you might not have ever heard of him. A 2018 seventh-round pick of the Bengals, his small size and traditional pocket style might be masked in Tennessee’s offense, but he’s also yet to take a single snap in three years."
It’s easy to see why Woodside would be the last guy on this list. He’s not a big name, hasn’t played much, and didn’t play college ball for a big school.
That being said, the Titans shouldn’t be dead last in this category. The Jets have someone named James Morgan as their backup and the Cowboys are rolling with a guy named Cooper Rush. Woodside might not have played in the NFL much but he was the quarterback for the San Antonio Commanders of the short-lived AAF and threw for 1,385 yards, seven touchdowns, and eight interceptions through eight games.
The Tennessee Titans aren’t in great shape at backup quarterback.
Backup quarterbacks might be an afterthought to some, but they shouldn’t be. If Ryan Tannehill were to go down for an extended period of time, the Titans will be in trouble because Woodside is inexperienced in the NFL. He could definitely surprise some people but hopefully, Titans fans don’t have to find out.
Even if Kizer was the likely backup, the Titans would still be ranked pretty low on Benjamin’s list because Kizer is on his third team since he was drafted No. 52 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Titan Sized’s own Geoffrey Knox discussed how Kizer might already have won the backup job and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him win the job over Woodside.
Hopefully, this is all a moot point and Tannehill stays healthy and fans don’t have to worry about who the backup is.
