Titans and Colts should call their rivals exes.

Over the weekend, the Cleveland Browns made a strong push for former Tennessee Titans EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, to which every Titans fan responded, “Great, where do we sign up?”

Clowney came to Tennessee with big expectations and then proceeded to be a key part of a defense that is now in the record books as the worst 3rd down defense in NFL history.

I’m not suggesting that all of the blame should be put on him, but we all need to understand what he was in Tennessee. While he showed flashes, his performance against the run was below-average and his pass rush was even worse.

So you can imagine how shocked I was to see that there might be a bidding war going on between the Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and the Indianapolis Colts for Clowney.

Here is where the Titans come into this whole conversation. The Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts have both been in contact with former Colts pass rusher Justin Houston, who should be viewed as the top EDGE on the market.

More from Titan Sized

If the Colts aren’t sold on Justin Houston returning, then this opens up an interesting scenario for the Titans. Let’s say that the Colts go after Clowney and sign him to a deal. Not only does that likely take them out of the hunt for Houston, but it also gives the Titans a clear idea of Houston’s market.

For example, if the Colts were willing to give Clowney a 1 year/$5 million deal, then that suggests that Houston should be willing to take something similar.

While there are plenty of veteran EDGEs on the market, getting an angry Justin Houston who wants vengeance on his former team, would give the Tennessee Titans defensive front a Ghidorah of pass rushers.

Over the last two years, Bud Dupree has averaged 0.7 sacks per game, Harold Landry has averaged 0.5 sacks per game, and Justin Houston had averaged 0.6 sacks per game (as a rotational player).

Add all of that up over a 17-game season and you are talking about three players combining for 31 sacks in a year.

So by all means, if the Colts are interested in Jadeveon Clowney, Titans fans should wish the pair nothing but happiness. In the meantime, Colts fans shouldn’t get mad if their ex joins the Titans and helps lead them to back-to-back AFC South division titles.
