Final verdict

I think the Titans are going to be interested in Greg Newsome, and it doesn’t surprise me that they are doing their due diligence on the top-10 cornerbacks in this draft class because I fully expect them to spend a top-100 pick on the position.

More from Titan Sized

However, I would bet that Newsome’s missed time, lack of interceptions and the competition level are all going to be negatives that push the Titans towards other options in the first round.

Could he still end up being drafted by the Titans? Absolutely. Jon Robinson has talked about the idea of having “pods” of players with similar values on his draft board. I think there are going to be teams interested in moving up for a safety, offensive tackle or running back at pick 22 and the Titans would be very smart to trade down if they were given the option.

On PFN’s mock draft simulator, I just ran a simulation where the Green Bay Packers offered the 29th pick and an extra 3rd round pick in a trade back. At that point, Newsome became one of the best players available and I ended up landing:

1st round: Greg Newsome CB, Northwestern

2nd round: Terrace Marshall WR, LSU

3rd round: D’Wayne Eskridge WR, Western Michigan

3rd round from GB: Payton Turner EDGE, Houston

3rd round: Tommy Tremble TE, Notre Dame

I think that scenario makes perfect sense to me.

However, I would ultimately bet against the Titans spending a first on Newsome in general just because it doesn’t mesh with what they have shown us during the offseason with pressure being valued more than coverage ability and the other flaws I mentioned earlier.
