Would a Titans trade for Raiders Gabe Jackson make sense?

With Jack Conklin likely gone, would a veteran presence at right guard help the Titans?

One of my biggest concerns is the Tennessee Titans heading into the season with a rookie or Dennis Kelly at right tackle and Nate Davis at right guard.

I’m not saying that Kelly and Davis aren’t starting caliber offensive linemen, but Davis needs to really refine his technique a little bit (especially in pass pro) and Kelly has had ups and downs when called upon.

The simple fix for this is to make Jack Conklin and offer he can’t refuse, and with a new CBA potentially coming to increase the cap for 2021 it isn’t impossible that a deal gets done there.

However, it looks increasingly likely that he is going to be able to get whatever contract he wants in free agency and he might want to get his money upfront.

If the Titans can’t do that then they would be wise to try to find another battle tested player to fill in that spot, but how can you do that without spending as much money as you would have on Jack Conklin?

It turns out that there is another option on the trade market:

The talented right guard with be 29 this year and he scheduled to make over $9 million per year. Luckily (as Rapoport says) that money is non guaranteed so potentially there is a deal to be made here that lowers that cap number in favor of more guaranteed money.

While PFF says that this was Gabe Jackson‘s worst year (great for most of his career and then just above average in 2019) , they have also been very high on him as a pass blocker. That is very important.

If the Titans want to sure up their protection on the inside for Ryan Tannehill then great, but if Tom Brady is coming then that is an absolute must. Brady crumbles when pressure starts coming up the middle and in Tennessee he isn’t going to have the best offensive line coach of all time to help him out.

In an ideal world, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to imagine Jack Conklin getting tagged and traded for a Day 2 pick and then sending something to the Raiders for Gabe Jackson on a reworked contract.

Is it their biggest need? No. But I would feel a lot more confident about Kelly and Jackson on the right side of the line than Kelly and Davis, so maybe if they don’t fall in love with any big name free agents they will have the money to make a move like this.
