The most notable coach in Tennessee Titans history has been announced as a 2020 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inductee. Former Titans head coach, Jeff Fisher, will be honored among other inductees, such as Tony Delk, Bettye Giles, Dick Horton, and Carl Torbush.

Per Jim Wyatt of Titansonline.com, Fisher was alerted in “mid-air” during an appearance on the Midday 180 on Friday.

As a player, Fisher played four seasons for the Chicago Bears as a defensive back and punt-return specialist. Following the 1984 season, Fisher segued into coaching.

His career began as defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1986. But, it didn’t take him long to climb the ranks; in 1994 — eight short years later — Fisher was promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach of the Houston Oilers following stints with the aforementioned Eagles, and the 1991 Los Angeles Rams.

Fisher went on to serve as a head coach in 339 games over 22 years. For the Oilers/Titans franchises, Fisher finished with a record of 142-120-0, just over the “five-hundred mark” at .542.

He led Tennessee to six playoff appearances, including Super Bowl XXXIV, but fell one-yard short of glory. Following the 2010 season, Tennessee parted ways with Fisher after 16 seasons with the team. And, it was time. For as many stellar teams that played under Fisher, there were just as many bad — hitting a low point in 2005 with a 4-12 record.

As far as Fisher’s career record goes, he was an average coach, by the numbers. But, as a leader of men, Fisher was a coach of grit and determination. His hard-nosed mentality led most of us into Tennessee fandom, and he provided memories for which fans will be eternally grateful.
