Just like we all thought before the season, Tennessee Titans free agency plans hinge on Ryan Tannehill.

What a difference four months makes, look no further than Ryan Tannehill who was refuting reports that he was in competition with Marcus Mariota to be the Tennessee Titans starting QB in 2019.

Now the question has been answered and the new question is what will a deal for Tannehill look like?

While Tennessee Titans fans wait for the answer to that question, it seems like there is another person waiting to see as well and that is Titans free agent running back Derrick Henry.

According to Ian Rapoport on 3HL this week, the plan seems to be to figure out a deal with Tannehill and then use the franchise tag on Derrick Henry.

Lately there has been some push back on franchise tags for running backs, but the players declining these tags have rarely come out the other side better for it.

Specifically Le’Veon Bell who appears to be on his way to another team just one year after a big deal from the New York Jets, and Melvin Gordon who tanked his value by missing a big chunk of the season and when he was on the field he was out shined by Austin Ekeler.

Rapoport followed it up his understanding of the Titans potential strategy explaining why Henry might be better off taking the deal and putting up another big year in Tennessee saying,

"“If Derrick Henry is free, it is going to be interesting because it is hard to be a running back in free agency, it’s not for everyone. And Derrick Henry, he is awesome but he is not for everyone either…he would help every team, but he wouldn’t have the same value to every one as he does to the Titans. So my sense is he is back, but how they are gonna do it is kinda interesting.”"

Ryan Tannehill’s willingness to get a deal done with the Titans as soon as possible will determine a lot about whether the team is able to figure out a franchise tag or a short term deal with Derrick Henry.

If they have to resort to tagging Tannehill, then the chances that Henry re-signs with the Titans before free agency starts is slim.
