The Tennessee Titans should put in a claim for recently released cornerback, Vernon Hargreaves.

With the Tennessee Titans having a need at cornerback, the team should put in a claim for recently released cornerback, Vernon Hargreaves.

A former first-round pick, Hargreaves was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Hargreaves was nothing short of a disappointment after the Bucs took him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Hargreaves has totaled just two picks in 35 career games and has missed several games due to injury during his four-year career.

Prior to the start of the season, the Bucs picked up the fifth-year option of Hargreaves’ rookie deal and had optimism for him coming into 2019, but that was short-lived. Hargreaves ran into issues during OTAs and was benched by head coach Bruce Arians during the team’s Week 10 win because of a lack of effort.

So, why would the Titans even consider taking a chance on him?

For starters, Tennessee recently lost one of their best corners in Malcolm Butler, who was placed on injured reserve after he broke his wrist in the Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Butler was having a great season, so filling his shoes completely will be almost impossible.

In his absence, the Titans are deploying LeShaun Sims, who has played OK the past two weeks, but infamously got torched by Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans in Week 8.

Now, this isn’t to say that Hargreaves is a lock to be better than Sims and the former first-round pick has certainly had his fair share of issues since coming into the league, but it would serve the Titans well to at least explore as many options as possible to fill the void left by Butler.

Perhaps a change of scenery to a new defense in Tennessee would change Hargreaves’ fortunes and turn his career around, and the Titans could find themselves a diamond in the rough that helps strengthen their defense.

The Titans saw Hargreaves up close in Week 8, and he had a decent game against them with five total tackles (four solo), one pass defensed and one fumble recovered in 53 snaps.

Of course, in order to nab Hargreaves the Titans will have to claim him off waivers and it’s very possible he gets picked up by a team before it even gets to Tennessee. Regardless, the Titans should at least put in a claim and see what happens.
