Tennessee Titans cutting Darius Jennings doesn’t make any sense

A look at why the Darius Jennings cut by the Tennessee Titans is perplexing.

The Tennessee Titans made a roster move today that seems to make sense on the surface, but when you look at it you can see why it is so weird.

In case you didn’t know, the Titans cut special teams star Darius Jennings in favor of interior lineman Hroniss Grasu.

That name may seem familiar, and that is because he was a solid player for the Titans in the preseason. Oh, and he was also Marcus Mariota‘s long time center at Oregon and they are really close friends.

While that is a strange move on its own, let’s just focus on positions.

I assume that Darius Jennings is hurt or that there is another issue because we saw Kalif Raymond return kicks for the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. However, even if they like Raymond as the kick returner it doesn’t diminish what Jennings does when he covers kicks.

The argument is that with Ben Jones and Rodger Saffold both questionable, the Tennessee Titans had to bring in another interior offensive lineman, but is that true?

Even if you take Jones and Saffold out of the lineup, the Titans still have:

Nate Davis

Jamil Douglas

Kevin Pamphile

Dennis Kelly

More from Titan Sized

With Saffold trending towards playing, that means that you are going to field 9 healthy offensive linemen heading into Sunday and then you will pick and choose who is active?

It just seems like a wasted roster spot on an extra offensive lineman. Carrying so many offensive linemen may end up hurting Tennessee on special teams, an area where they have actually been solid this year (aside from the field goals).

If you were going to cut someone, why not cut Stinnie or Pamphile who you obviously have no confidence in at this point?

I may be in the minority, but having players who do really well on special teams and have a clear role on the roster, is more important to me than having a third or four backup interior offensive lineman.

There must be more to the story, but it is slightly aggravating that the team’s worst performing position group as a whole is demanding so many resources and providing so little help. Outside of Taylor Lewan, Jack Conklin and Ben Jones the offensive line has been very underwhelming and the other guys’ inability to provide a clear cut depth chart may have just found a way to hurt Tennessee even worse.
