What do we know about the Tennessee Titans next head referee?

I don’t know if the referees cost the Tennessee Titans a win last week, but they certainly didn’t help the home team at all.

In my mind, the fair thing to do is to split the majority of the blame up between the offensive coordinator, offensive line, head coach, and referees. If you don’t think they had that big of an impact, go back and look at these calls:

-The unnecessary roughness call on Jurrell Casey that gave the Bills offense life and ultimately led to the go ahead goal.

-A dumb holding call the official made on Jack Conklin on the goal line when the run was going away from him and where (if there even was a hold) it had no impact on the touchdown that was called back.

-Even after that play, when you look at the wording of the illegal forward pass, Mariota arguably should have been good for a touchdown.

Those three calls directly or indirectly ended up in a net loss of 21 points for the Titans, in a game where the final score was 14-7.

So, ahead of this week’s game I tried to do some digging and some research to figure out what the road team can expect from Alex Kemp.

The results are not good for the Tennessee Titans.

According to Pro Football Reference (maybe the best stats and info site around for any sport), Kemp awards just under 40% of the penalties to the home team this year. That is a whopping 7.5% increase from the league average.

The home teams win 60% of the games he has called this year, which is way higher than the league average which is just 44%.

If there is good news, it is that opposing teams are being allowed to score in his games so there is a chance that he and his crew are more lenient about taking away scoring drives (which was not the case for the Titans last week).

In 4 of the 5 games Kemp has called this year the opposing team has scored 23 points, which you would love if you are a Titans fan.

The TL;DR of all of this is: The Tennessee Titans aren’t going to be getting any favors from Kemp’s crew who have been calling things in favor of the home team at a very high rate. Though they aren’t hurting offensive output, that crew is averaging 19 penalties per game for over 150 yards. Those numbers are well above the league average and it is just another thing the Titans will have to deal with on Sunday.
